Continued Support of Our Life Sciences Legacy

Representative John Hornaman
3rd Legislative District

I was very proud in September 2008 to be named a co-chair of the House Life Sciences Caucus. As we look at the challenges facing not only Pennsylvania, but the nation, during these current economic problems, we must look to industries that have their foundation in innovation to spur growth. In Pennsylvania, we have a strong legacy in the life sciences that we need to continue to support. The industry is already one of Pennsylvania's strengths, and it is an area that, with the right policies, we can continue to lead in globally. The job that we have as a Life Sciences Caucus is to address policy issues that are important to the biotechnology and life sciences industry in Pennsylvania so we can realize this continued growth.

I became personally involved and interested in the industry through my acquaintance with John Kanzius, a retired Erie broadcast executive who invented a medical device to revolutionize cancer treatment. In the past year and a half as a co-chair of the House Life Sciences Caucus, I have had the opportunity to learn more about how the industry impacts the Commonwealth. With more than 1700 establishments and a direct employment of nearly 77,000, it is an incredible source for growth for PA's economy, but more importantly a great source of promise for patients everywhere.

As a Representative from Erie County, I see great work happening across the western part of the state. The Kanzius research alone, once approved by the FDA, will ultimately lead to an economic explosion for the Erie area. This work, when combined with the activity in areas such as the Philadelphia region, State College, the Lehigh Valley, Pittsburgh and other locations, makes us a global powerhouse.

Pennsylvania Bio's Life Sciences Day in Harrisburg back in January was a great start to the year to help us focus on what we as policymakers need to consider, not just as part of this year's budget in Pennsylvania, but also long-term. I look forward to continuing the discussions we had that Tuesday with my colleagues on the House Life Sciences Caucus to support our entrepreneurs and spur growth in Pennsylvania.
